Today´s Special: Alter Bridge

Alter Bridge is an American hard rock band from Orlando. Formed by Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips (former members of Creed), with Myles Kennedy (lead vocals and guitar formerly of The Mayfield Four).
Alter Bridge released their debut album One Day Remains on August 10, 2004 along with their first single "Open Your Eyes", which was followed by "Find The Real" and "Broken Wings".
They released their second album, Blackbird on October 9th, 2007. Their first single of the album, "Rise Today", was released on July 30th, 2007.

History

Alter Bridge were formed in 2004 by former Creed members Mark Tremonti, Scott Phillips, and Brian Marshall. Marshall didn't appear on Creed's third album "Weathered." He left Creed in 2000 because of differences with singer Scott Stapp, but joined his former bandmates in this project. Singer Myles Kennedy, formerly of The Mayfield Four, joined the Orlando based band later. The band members originally met Kennedy when his former band The Mayfield Four toured with Creed in 1998.

The band juggled several names before settling for Alter Bridge. The name comes from a bridge on Alter Road, close to Tremonti's childhood home. The bridge is at the intersection of Alter and Korte, which forms the border between the city of Detroit, Michigan and the city of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan. The bridge signified a boundary to Tremonti when he was a child. His parents didn't want him crossing the bridge because the neighborhood on the other side wasn't considered safe enough for him to play as a child. Other names considered for the band include "Downright", "Solace", and "One Day Remains" (which would become the title of their debut album).

The band was signed to Wind-up Records and released said debut album on August 10, 2004. The album produced three hit singles and was certified gold in the US, and platinum internationally. In addition, the song "Metalingus" was modified by World Wrestling Entertainment and used as the theme song for Edge, starting in October of that year. About a year later, the band appeared on an episode of WWE RAW in 2005 during Edge's worked shoot feud with Matt Hardy, as they were shown backstage with Edge, who cited them as his good friends.

In April 2006, Alter Bridge announced that they had terminated their contract with Wind-Up Records, securing the rights to much of their studio and live catalog. The reason for the split was because of pressure put on Tremonti, Phillips, and Marshall to reunite with Scott Stapp and reform Creed. By May 25, 2007, they had finished recording of the new album. On July 9, 2007, it was announced that the band was signed by Universal Republic Records.

Their next album, titled Blackbird, was released on October 9, 2007. The first single off the new album is titled "Rise Today", and was released for digital download on July 30, 2007. The song was also the official theme song for WWE Unforgiven 2007. The music video for "Rise Today" debuted October 4, 2007 on the Yahoo! Music website. In November the song "Watch Over You" off Blackbird began getting airplay in the US. However, it was later revealed that "Ties That Bind" would be released as the second single on January 21, 2008.

Today´s Dish: M83

M83 is an electronic music group consisting of Anthony Gonzalez (and formerly Nicolas Fromageau), and was formed in Antibes, France in 2001. The musical style owes something to the shoegazing genre in its extensive use of reverb effects and lyrics spoken softly over loud instrumentals, though M83's songs employ considerably less guitar than most shoegazing bands such as My Bloody Valentine. All three of their albums were well received, in particular Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts, their second album, which allowed them to break through to a larger audience. For the third album released by M83, Before the Dawn Heals Us, Gonzalez decided to part from Fromageau (after an emotionally distressing tour for Dead Cities) and record mainly on his own, with the help of a few other musicians.

M83's song "Unrecorded" from Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts was used in the trailer for the international release of the Russian movie Night Watch, and the track "Teen Angst", taken from Before the Dawn Heals Us, appears on the trailer for the film adaptation of A Scanner Darkly. Some of M83's tracks were featured in several Top Gear episodes, including "Unrecorded" (series 3, episode 2; and series 4, episode 5), "Cyborg" (series 3, episode 5) and most notably, "Moonchild" (series 7, episode 3; and series 7, episode 7). M83's "Don't Save us From the Flames", which is about a car crash, was also featured in a Pontiac commercial. Cyann & Ben's cover of "In Church" was featured in the 2006 film Stranger than Fiction.

M83 produced the remix of the track "Pioneers" on British group Bloc Party's 2005 album Silent Alarm Remixed. They have also remixed Placebo's "Protège-Moi", Goldfrapp's "Black Cherry", Depeche Mode's "Suffer Well" and Bumblebeez 81's "Vila Attack". Similarly, M83's songs have been remixed by Gooom labelmates Montag and Cyann & Ben.

In 2005, M83 also reissued their 2001 self-titled album. This was made available in the United States, unlike the 2001 release.

The name M83 is picked from the galaxy of the same name.

In 2006, after the Before the Dawn Heals Us US tour, Anthony Gonzalez continued to explore a musical direction already heard on earlier M83 tracks and began writing and recording a collection of ambient works. The album was recorded primarily at his home studio with the assistance of Antoine Gaillet. The resulting project is called Digital Shades Volume 1 and was released on September 3, 2007. It is intended to be part of an ongoing series of ambient works.

M83 plans to release a new album in January 2008.
